Many people have a pension with Smart Pension and may not realise. Whether your employer used Smart Pension as their workplace pension provider or you have residual savings in the scheme, it is worth checking if you have a pension there and tracing it. This guide explains how Smart Pension works, how to check if you have one and the easiest ways to trace it.
Smart Pension will send annual statements and account information. Try searching your inbox for “Smart Pension”. If you have moved address, it might also be worth checking whether any letters were sent to your previous address.
If your employer used Smart Pension for their automatic enrolment or workplace scheme, they should be able to confirm whether you were enrolled and the dates contributions were paid. Employers normally retain records of which provider they used during each employment period.
If you suspect you have a pension with Smart Pension, you can contact them directly and they will check if you hold a pension in your name.

They will usually ask for your name, date of birth, National Insurance number and any previous address you used. They can confirm whether you have a pension and how to access it. Please note that as of 1st December 2025, the average wait time for Smart Pensions was 7 minutes to speak to an agent.
If you are unsure which provider your old employer used, the Pension Tracing Service can tell you the name and contact details of the pension provider linked to your employer. It will not tell you whether you have a pension or the value, but it helps you find out if Smart Pension was used.
If you prefer not to contact providers yourself, Pension App can trace old Smart Pensions on your behalf. All you need to do is enter your basic details and list your previous employers. We then contact providers for you, including Smart Pension, and update you when we receive information. No paperwork and you can track everything in one place.
If you believe you may have a Smart Pension now lost or inaccessible, starting the tracing process today can help you bring everything together in one app. It helps you understand what you have and gives you the tools to stay organised for the future.
With pensions your capital is at risk.
